4-Chord Song

Found this on my RSS feeder today, thought I would share it :)

Does anyone know why these 4 chords seem so prevalent?

I am, by no STRETCH of the imagination, musically talented or informed… but I looked them up and the Internets seems to indicate that it isn’t NECESSARILY the same 4 chords, but rather the same progression in a given key, (yah, i totally sound like I know what I”m talking about there… yup, sure do).  The chords are 1, 5, 6, 4 in whatever key you want. (e.g. E B C#m A if you’re in the key of E).

Interesting how cultural consciousness works that way LOL.

  1. I wonder if this is not a chicken/egg thing.
Do we like these songs because the 4 chords go well together, or do they go well together because we (as a race) like the sound they make?
It seems to me that music has been learned and developed throught the filter of humanity from the start! It could be that when the concept of music is discovered through a different filter, we have drastically different note combinations. Just a thought.

  2. Yah, this is definitely true. There is something satisfying about this combination, (just kinda “feels” right for lack of a better technical term), but I definitely think it is a learned thing… our songs do this because we “LEARNED” that they do this, kinda like reading left to right vs. right to left in alot of other countries.

Might be interesting to see if this same 1, 5, 6, 4 phenomenon is prevalent in other cultures music ;)

  3. OK, I have to admit, I just responded to your comment before and didn’t watch the video.
I just watched it and it was HILARIOUS!!!
    That’s just awsome!
