One of the things I have lamented here on my blog is the fact that, due to my current lifestyle, I am almost always unable to go see movies in theaters when they are first released, (hence all the DVD movie reviews I do here). My friend Tony contacted me about a week ago wanted to see a review of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, to which I had to explain I would probably have to wait until I saw the DVD version. He took matters into his own hands and offered to write his OWN review of the movie theater version. Thanks Tony!
.
Michael Bay’s Transformer’s: Revenge of the Fallen is a welcome addition to the world of cinema and movies. Thanks to this latest blockbuster creation, we now have 2 and 1/2 hours of footage that could help anyone with a brain to show others within their circle of influence an perfect example of the trash that Hollywood is producing. It’s been happening for some while now and unfortunately could only be deciphered by someone with a pechant for a well constructed plot, strong character development or a good use of lighting and camera angles. Since the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a good number of viewers should start being able to sniff out the major flaws in modern films and realize they are being fed 100%, Grade A junk during their $10 cinema experience.
.
Stay home and rent it to see these things for yourself. Afterward, find yourself an older action film like Rambo: First Blood or even Predator with our current Governor of CA. An action movie can have a real plot, character development and still gain a pile of fans. What’s amazing about this is that you can have it all even without gratuitous shots of Megan Fox…who would’ve guessed that!?!
.
Simply put, this was the worst movie I have ever paid to see. Sure, bad movies come out all the time, but the killer to me about this one was how far it fell from the first episode that came out in this series. The first was entertaining, but this was just an attempt to find the lowest common denominator for what will make people laugh and be dazzled through the use of special effects. It was over two hours of a completely incoherent plotline, stupid (very cartoonish, yet oddly lewd) jokes and sitcom-type humor, ridiculous overuse of 360-panning crane cams (as if someone fired the guy in charge of cinematography), and non-stop slow motion shots of Megan Fox fleeing from the explosions while wearing a revealing shirt. Stupid moments of heroism and dumb speeches between the characters made the final battle really excruciating to watch (I wretched in my seat after each one). The plot had so many loose-ends and holes that you just gave up trying to figure things out. The real kicker was when the main character’s parents get magically transported to Egypt and then there’s a ‘Full-House-type-moment’ when Shia Leboeuf’s character has a talk with his dad about ‘letting him go’ in the midst of a big dumb robot fight that seems to be hurting no one, yet makes it seem like it’s the end of the world.
.
Surprising enough, in the theater sat numerous people around me that were honestly enjoying what was happening on the screen. People were being fed their own imagination and no one seemed to feel ripped off by it. I can’t just admire Megan Fox and appreciate her beauty, I have to be given a 30 second clip of her breasts jiggling in slow motion. I can’t imagine what a typical college experience is like, the movie shows me that Shia Leboeuf going to college means he’s 1 of 4 guys in a dorm of FHM models, pot-brownies are being sold to his Mom, frat parties are like Las Vegas dance clubs and his professors, of course, are eccentric and egotistical. Robots can’t fight like normal science-fiction robots, they have to use Kung-Fu style moves while saying cheesy one-liners. The list goes on and it just comes down to how dumb Hollywood thinks we are and how willing they are to produce garbage and put their stamp of approval on it.
.
Actually, maybe after Tony’s review, I’ll save my Redbox $1 for another movie! LOL.

Honestly, I don’t think anybody should go into Transformers 2 thinking it’s going to be a cinematic masterpiece. You go see this movie because you know it’s an action movie based on a cartoon from your childhood, not because you expect there to be profound quotes or real-life applications. I really enjoyed the part where Sidewinder sliced a guy in half, said a “cheesy one-liner”, and then transformed into a Corvette. That’s what the movie is about! (I was also miffed that Megan Fox [and her gross thumb] rolled around the desert in Egypt wearing white pants that NEVER got dirty until the very end.)

I have to be honest… I didn’t really watch Transformers as a child… I lived out in the boonies and we didn’t get alot of TV channels… so I don’t REALLY know WHAT to expect with these kinds of movies
LOL @ M. Fox’s gross thumb and white pants!

Wow. You must be happy that you didn’t waste your money. My son said pretty much the same thing. He was impressed that they reused footage thinking that noone would notice. He said in one scene when a bunch of the transformers formed into a mega transformer, they showed the bunch fighting somewhere else.
My son said the first one was much better because of the character development missing in the second.
Bring Tony back for an encore!

Yeah, I’m starting to see that my money could be put to better use… I *enjoyed* the first one, but not immensely, so I wasn’t really hyped to go see this one. (see above… boonies, didn’t watch growing up, etc.)
I wish I had seen this movie if only so I could participate! It seems that there are two camps on this, and both are pretty passionate.
1. The movie sucked
2. The movie was awesome
Not to discount what MrsGrevious said, because I’m KNOW there are alot of people out there who grew up with Transformers and/or are big fans and enjoy seeing them up on the big screen, but I would have to say that, as a vast majority, the movie-going community seemed pretty disillusioned by the QUALITY of both the cinematography and script…

?? @ Ralph – Just re-read your comment… they RE-USED footage?! A multi-million dollar movie project with a fanbase with a propensity for dissecting and deconstructing every second of a film, and they have the audacity to REUSE footage? REALLY?
July 24, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Lol I just read that re-used footage thing. I thought some of the scenes at the end looked repetitive, but I hadn’t asked anybody else yet. When I told my boyfriend about the white pants thing he went ALL THAT STUFF WAS GOING ON AND YOU WERE LOOKING AT HER PANTS???

LOL, hey, things gotta make sense! Funny how guys and girls are different like that.

It probably wasn’t actually the pants.

I think my kids enjoyed the movie, but they again, if it is loud, colorful, and has some action, then they are going to enjoy it.

My son swears some of the footage has been reused. He’s just seen it for the first time on DVD and is watching his copy of the first one not to compare scenes with the rented second movie.
