From: "The Simpsons" Treehouse of Horror V (1994)
Adapted from the script from the original airing of “The Simpsons” Tree House of Horror V (1995)
Homer Simpson: [mumbling] No beer and no World of Warcraft make Homer *something something*…
Marge Simpson: Go crazy?
Homer Simpson: Don’t mind if I DO! (flips out)…
Lisa Simpson: Dad, look!
[holds up "Lich King Expansion"]
Homer Simpson: World of Warcraft! Teacher, mother…
Homer Simpson: [lustily] … secret lover. Urge to kill… fading… fading… fading – rising! Fading… fading… gone.
[family sighs]
Homer Simpson: Come, family. sit in the snow with daddy and let us all bask in World of Warcraft’s warm glowing warming glow.
[Hours later, everyone is frozen]
For some reason this episode always stuck out in my mind, not only because it was a spoof on one of the creepiest psychological horror films I personally have ever seen, The Shining, but because it was funny cause it is true… of course I have replaced TV, Homer’s addiction, with that of my own.
Happily, I have found over the past few months the urge to play has faded… I don’t get the cravings like I use to… I don’t have dreams about playing anymore and I don’t lament my self-imposed banishment of the cancer that almost claimed my life.
So often, I read of people who are still struggling to break away from logging on and leveling/raiding/etc… (especially over at WoW Detox)… I realize how lucky I am to have gotten out when I was able too!
If you are reading this and you are trying to quit, know that it CAN be done, and though I know it is hard, also know that it is TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Glad to hear that the urge is fading. Now you kind of have a new addiction, but a good one. That is getting healthy and fit. OK, maybe the word addiction is to strong of a word for this new lifestyle we are adapting. Maybe it’s more of a desire and determination that is moving us forward to a better way of life, physically, mentally and spiritually. Either way what we are doing is going to provide us with many long years ahead. keep up the great work in all that you are doing to improve your way of life. It is working.

I agree with Rob. The new addiction is not a bad one though. It is one that will keep you alive and healthy. Make it a great day!

Just a comment. How can anything which can be described as an addiction be good?

@ Rob – “a desire and a determination” — right on!
I fight back the regrets I feel for not doing this sooner, but the changes we are making is a new start, so forget about the mistakes of the past and look to the healthy future!
@ Steve – absolutely! I can’t believe I use to spend 6-8 hours a night in front of a computer, when I could be busting my butt in the gym and on my bike, leveling in real-life
If we do whatever we can every single day that has been given to us, then it is indeed a GOOD DAY
@ Ralph – yup, i agree with you here, the word “addiction” has almost exclusively bad connotations, and this is anything but bad!
like Rob said, it is “a desire and a determination” that drives us, not truely an addiction, but addiction is alot more encapsulated to say. A desire to better ones self for the good of their family and friends could NEVER be bad imho

@ralph / @wrthofnino
I agree with both you comments, but here is one to consider. Since I quit wow some 7 months ago … I am now again Addicted to life. I hope you agree, this is a good healthy addiction.

@ Ian – Hey, thanks for posting! I totally agree that living life to the fullest is ALWAYS a good thing
I think the issue here is just symantics: the word “addiction” has negative connotations (i.e. almost always a BAD thing to have an addiction), but yeah, DEFINTELY a good thing to be living life again
Good to hear you are also fighting off the WoWbeast! I hope you continue to have success and enjoy/experience life in all moments
