Premise: Robert Neville, (Will Smith), a lone surviving scientist living in New York City in the year 2012. For 3 years, Neville has had to live with the inner demons of knowing he had a hand in unleashing a genetically re-engineered measles virus called Krippin Virus or KV, that wiped out 90% of the human population. Of the 10% that remain, less than 1% were immune to the virus and the other roughly 9% have mutated into creatures that have lost all human emotion and have developed gruesome physical features, including skin that is reactive to UV-rays.
Dr. Neville, with his beloved sidekick Sam, a 3-year-old German Sheppard, struggle to live in a seemingly post-apocalyptic city, full of wild-life, degrading buildings, loneliness and danger. Driven only by his obsession with finding a cure he feels he can extract from his own immune blood, Neville carries on as normal a life as he is able as the last known survivor of New York City, and possibly the world.
Analysis: I loved this movie! I was so afraid when I heard what the premise of the story would be that it would be another “Castaway”, with Tom Hanks muttering to himself the entire 2 1/2 hours. Luckily, Will Smith is able to foil himself with the surrounding environment a bit more smoothly the poor Wilson, (ie. Hank the mannequin, the mystery woman mannequin, Sam his dog).
I also really appreciated the depth at with Smith played his Neville character. Smith easily portrayed the paranoia, fear, and loneliness that would doubtlessly haunt a person in that situation, and we are left with no doubt that any human being in that outlandish position would act and feel the same way as Smith’s character.
I have read in other reviews online 2 major detractions for this movie:
- The CGI of the mutants looking, “too fake”
- The book being better
I think that these two sentiments are ALWAYS detractions… people will ALWAYS think the book is better, (whether it is or not), to project their superiority in reading the book, unlike us unintelligent knuckle-draggers who only watch the movie.
As far as the CGI, sure it was unrealistic… but mutant humans that are allergic to the sun are pretty unrealistic altogether, dontcha think??
Overall, I very much enjoyed this movie. I would recommend it and definitely watch it again
